Here, Mrs Christie wrote her two novels set on the Island (‘Evil Under the Sun’ and ‘And Then There Were None’). The Beach House is now a sophisticated and modern beach retreat.

Finally, Burgh Island itself comes into view – and depending on what time you arrive, will either be fully cut off from the mainland or, at low tide, accessible on foot. The only other ‘inhabitant’ of the island – other than the hotel itself – is the quaint Pilchard Inn, resident since the 14th Century to serve the fishermen, and later, the smugglers, of Devon.
